The evidence checklist for a YouTube copyright removal request

What to have assembled before a request is submitted, why YouTube may ask for more, and four gaps that leave a request incomplete.

Platform policy

Assemble before you submit

YouTube’s removal request form in YouTube Studio is short, which can give a misleading impression of how much preparation a good submission needs. The form is where a request is entered; it is not where the work is done.

Everything below should exist as a record before the form is opened. Assembling it first means the form only has to receive it.

The checklist

The original reference. The URL where your work was first published, and the publication date the platform shows for it.

Ownership evidence. Source files, project archives, the account that first published it, correspondence establishing the commission, or a registration if one exists.

The exact reported URL, in the format YouTube uses for that content type. For a video that is the watch page — not a playlist, not a search result. For material that is part of a channel, such as banner artwork, YouTube asks for the channel address instead. One item per URL, recorded separately.

The correspondence. What in the reported video corresponds to what in your work, with timestamps if the copying is partial.

Your role. Whether you are the copyright owner or an authorized representative, and if the latter, written authorization covering these works and this action.

Contact details you are prepared to have shared. YouTube states that the full legal name and primary email address may be shared with the person reported.

A screening record. What you considered on the copyright-exception question, and why you concluded the use was not authorized by law.

Four gaps that leave a request incomplete

Reporting a whole channel instead of the material

YouTube states that you cannot submit a copyright removal request for an entire channel or playlist. The statute asks for information reasonably sufficient to locate the material, and a channel sweep does not locate anything — each item needs its own address.

Note the exception, because it runs the other way: where the material is part of the channel — banner artwork, the channel description — YouTube’s own URL table asks for the channel address. It is the wrong address for a video and the right address for a banner. Match the format to the content type rather than to a habit.

YouTube also directs copyright removal requests for non-video content, such as channel banner images, to email, fax or mail rather than the YouTube Studio form.

Ownership asserted rather than shown

It’s my video is a claim. The account that published it first, the project files, and the publication date are what make the claim checkable.

Authorization that does not reach the works

A representative filing on an authorization that names different works, or grants a different action, is filing outside their scope — and element 6 of the notice is a statement about exactly that scope.

Partial copying described without timestamps

If someone checking the request cannot locate the copied portion from what you wrote, the correspondence has not been established.

Why more information may be requested

A request for more information is not a rejection. YouTube states that it contacts the claimant when a request is missing information or needs more detail, and gives examples: providing a more specific title of the copyrighted content, submitting evidence of authorization to act on behalf of the copyright owner, or confirming whether copyright exceptions such as fair use were considered. It also states that the content may stay up until it has the information it needs.

The practical consequence is delay: the matter is on hold until it is answered. A record assembled before the form is opened means those questions can be answered straight away.

Bureau interpretation

Every item on this checklist is something we assemble and a person on our team reviews before anything reaches a platform. Where an item is missing, the matter waits or is referred back to the owner — we do not submit a request and treat the platform’s follow-up questions as the review step. This is our approach, not a statement of YouTube policy.
